Blue-Economy Mobility Project - Project Hiu

Published: 7th August 2025

Are you an undergraduate student interested in contributing to the development of a sustainable future for sharks and local community members in Indonesia, while gaining credit towards your degree?

Project Hiu 2023 630x380

Murdoch University, University of Mataram, and Project Hiu invite you to express your interest in this exciting mobility project during this Summer – November/December 2025.

  • 3 credit point BUS3451 - Professional Business Project unit with Murdoch Business School
  • Duration: 10-week unit with a 4-week immersion in Indonesia
  • Travel Dates: 22 November - 20 December 2025 (subject to change and flight availability). Including: 18 nights Universitas Mataram (UNRAM), Lombok. 10 nights Kuta Lombok with day trips to Maringkik Island which is located 1.2km (10 - 15-minute boat ride) from Lombok
  • Funding: $4000 New Colombo Plan Mobility grants available to cover flights, accommodation and other program expenses.

Supported by the New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant Program, this unique 3-credit unit aims to regenerating the most distressed marine ecosystems, by providing alternative incomes to the world’s largest fleet of shark fishing vessels, and to simultaneously expand its impact to improving basic human needs for the residents and families of Maringkik Island such as water supply, waste management, eco-conservation, education, and community welfare and development.

Empowered by deepening partnerships with more local stakeholders, the program now delivers transformative learning experiences that cultivate Asia literacy, Indonesian language proficiency, and intercultural competence—essential skills for thriving in a globally connected world. At its core, the Blue-Economy Project embodies a bold vision for sustainable business practices, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility and impact, while enhancing learning through real-world engagement and nurturing dynamic professional and international collaborations across the region.

What can you expect?

Guided and supported by Murdoch academic Dr David Zhang and in collaboration with project partners Universitas Mataram (UNRAM) and Project Hiu, students will work in teams to design and contribute solutions to an identified real need, opportunity or problem.
