Harry Butler Science Centre – Site preparation begins

Published: 6th October 2025

Campus Development is excited to share that the enabling works for the Harry Butler Science Centre have begun, aiming to prepare the site south of Discovery Way and north of Campus Drive (former Chiropractic Techniques Building site) for construction.

Harry Butler Science Centre

Keeping with our sustainability commitments, significant trees will be retained. Any trees necessary to be removed from next week will be replanted at a ratio of 1:3 on Campus, and any plant material will remain onsite to be reused.

Surveys found no fauna present within the work zone, and the trees identified for removal are not considered critical habitat for threatened black cockatoo species. Fauna fencing aims to prevent harm to wildlife during the construction of the Harry Butler Science Centre.

Key points for our community:

  • A small number of trees and some associated vegetation will be removed under the direction of qualified arborists.
  • Fauna fencing has been installed and monitored for the past week, with no animals trapped or displaced.
  • Offset planting and landscaping will take place as part of the project to ensure long-term ecological balance, in line with Murdoch University’s sustainability policies.
  • Environmental controls will be in place throughout demolition and construction to minimise impact.

We recognise that tree removal can raise questions and concerns. Please be assured that the University has undertaken thorough due diligence, with environmental assessments spanning several years, to ensure this work complies with state and federal regulations and aligns with our sustainability commitments.

Thank you for your understanding as we take this next step in delivering a world-class, environmentally responsible Science Centre for our community.
