This Sustainable September, we are inviting students and staff to explore the many ways sustainability is already part of life at Murdoch, and to take one step further. Across the month, the calendar brings together opportunities to learn, participate, repair, ride, connect with nature, and build the skills needed for a more sustainable future.
While individual actions are only one part of the broader change needed, they play an important role in building culture, confidence, and momentum. Murdoch University is also continuing to embed sustainability across operations, education, research, engagement, and decision-making, guided by the Sustainability Strategy and Ngala Kwop Biddi.
Everyday actions for impact
Small actions are easier to maintain when they fit into daily routines. This month is a chance to try something new, refresh what you already know, and connect with others who are taking action in different ways.
Some simple ways to start include:
- Consider sustainable transport to campus, including walking, riding, carpooling, or public transport where possible. Visit the Getting to Perth Campus page for a complete guide on sustainable transport options.
- Bring reusables to campus, including water bottles, hot beverage cups, containers, and utensils.
- Think critically about your digital footprint, including the energy impacts of digital tools and AI. Read more about it here.
Connect, participate, and celebrate sustainability this September
Throughout September, students can join a range of activities and everyday actions across sustainable transport, circularity, biodiversity, and learning. Whether you want to build a practical skill, discover more about campus initiatives, or simply get involved for the first time, there is something to explore through the Sustainability events page.
Week 1
Start the month: Refuse, reduce, reuse
Make reusables part of your campus routine by bringing water bottles, hot beverage cups, containers and utensils. You can also recycle like a boss with the Recycle Right guide and learn about circularity and recycling through Murdoch’s sustainability resources.
Thursday 3 September: Learn to ride a bike – free training session 1 of 3
It is never too late to learn to ride. This supportive training is designed for students who have not had the opportunity to learn before and want to build confidence, safety knowledge, and practical riding skills. Registrations are essential via People on Bicycles.
Week 2
Sustainable September Guild Markets
Visit the Guild Markets on Thursday 10 September to connect with sustainability activities on campus. You can test ride an e-bike at the pop-up stall, book a free bike service, and give well-loved clothes a longer life by booking a Free Clothing Repair . You can also explore how to join or start a sustainability-focused community through the Murdoch Guild clubs directory. Join or start a sustainability-focused Guild club
Week 3
September is also Biodiversity Month: Explore, observe, and celebrate nature
September is Biodiversity Month, making it a great time to explore Murdoch’s Banksia Woodland and Chelodina Wetland reserves, learn more about Biodiversity Month, enter the Fauna on Film wildlife photo competition or join the Threatened Species Bake off and share photos of your creations on social media.
Week 4
Learn, engage, and build your green skills
Use Sustainable September to take the next step in your learning. Develop your green skills by exploring sustainability units as electives and the extracurricular program Murdoch Mettle.
You can consider nominating yourself or encouraging a friend to become an elected Sustainability Student Representative. Visit Elections to find out more details. If you have an idea for a sustainability project on campus you can apply for the Students as Change Agents Program.
If you want to stay up to date with sustainability events and initiatives, Join the Sustainability Collective meeting to keep the conversation going.
