Murdoch Announcements & Events

Dear Colleagues

posted 06 May 2016 | Staff Announcement - (staff)

This morning the Minister for Education and Training, Senator the Hon. Simon Birmingham announced the outcomes of the Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Projects scheme, with Murdoch one of the top performers nationally.

Our University has a long history of delivering research which offers solutions to the communities in which we work, at a local, national and international level. Funding from the ARC Linkage Scheme recognises the critical importance of the work of our researchers in partnership with key stakeholders from government, business, industry and end-users.

Murdoch continues to demonstrate expertise in translational research, forging strong industry partnerships that are making a difference to the world. New discoveries and a world of opportunity await, and we are well placed to capitalise on the Federal Government’s commitment to the National Innovation and Science Agenda.

This year Murdoch University has performed extremely well. Fifty per cent of our ARC Linkage Projects were successful – no other university has a higher success rate than us – with work in fire suppression engineering, ecology, conservation, biology and public health rewarded:

  • ‘Tiresome ticks: Ecology and transmission of tick-borne disease in Australia’

Professor Peter Irwin, Professor Una Ryan and Dr Charlotte Oskam

  • ‘Backyard Bandicoots: Engaging community in urban bushland conservation’

Associate Professor Trish Fleming, Professor Giles Hardy and Dr Catherine Baudains

  • ‘Wicked problems: Optimising fire management for a resilient future’

Professor Neal Enright and Dr Joseph Fontaine

  • ‘Fume resistant explosives for critical areas

Professor Bogdan Dlugogorski and Dr Mohammednoor Altarawneh

A summary sheet of the ARC linkage projects is attached here for your interest.

This latest funding success enhances Murdoch’s reputation as a research-led institution which offers both students and researchers a platform on which to unlock the answers to global challenges.

Many people contributed to the development of the Murdoch University submissions and I would like to thank them all for their efforts, and acknowledge the strength of work carried out in all our submissions, successful or not. The competition is always tough and we know we submitted excellent projects this year.

Regards

Professor David Morrison
